In fact, it was the Cold War that destroyed the Portuguese empire (in Angola and Mozambique), as the USA and USSR tried to increase their sphere of control. The first action was made by the USA in Angola in late 1960’s. The USA created an independence movement for Angola, leaded by an Afro-American (very possibly, a CIA agent) who declared himself as an Angolan (although he could only speak English, he could not speak Portuguese, French or African languages, as it would be expected in that region - because of this, even at the time, many saw that he was not Angolan nor from the Region), this group killed thousands of Portuguese and Africans in a terrorist attack in Northern Angola farms (the fazendas). This was the event that started the war in Angola.
